Best known for being the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island is not short on appeal. Providence, the largest city and capital, is a center of education, arts and medicine. The city boasts multiple institutions of higher education, including Brown University, Johnson and Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College and the Rhode Island School of Design. Providence also has great shopping at locations like The Arcade, Wayland Square and Providence Place Mall. When in Rhode Island, visitors should make the drive down to the seaside town of Newport. A New England summer resort for the rich and famous during the Gilded Age, Newport is famous for historic mansions like The Breakers, Rosecliff, the Elms, Kingscote, Chateau-sur-Mer and Marble House. School groups can schedule tours of one or more of these incredibly luxurious mansions.
